GUINNESS SOUTH EAST ASIAN GAELIC GAMES
ORANG ÉIRE LADIES ARE THE SOUTH EAST ASIAN CHAMPIONS
Malaysia’s Orang Éire Ladies Gaelic football team were crowned South East Asian Champions at the Guinness-sponsored regional tournament in KL on Saturday 9th May. Orang Éire ladies saw off Singapore in the final with a strong win of 4 goals and 6 points to 1 goal and 2 points. In addition to this fantastic achievement Orang Éire Captain Jenn Collins was presented with "Player of the Tournament" award while Trish Taylor picked up the "Player of the Final" award as a well deserved recognition for their outstanding efforts. The ladies qualified for the top slot by winning all their qualifying games.
The Guinness South East Asian Gaelic Games were held at the Alice Smith School in Seri Kembangan outside KL on Saturday 9th May 2009. Over a hundred and twenty players from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Cambodia travelled to compete in the second annual Guinness Championships. The tournament held Gaelic competitions for kids, ladies & men teams.
Orang Éire kids also made it to the final but lost to the Malaysian Auzkick Australian Rules Football club who won by 2 goals and 4 points to nil.
The Mens Division was won by Singapore Whites 1 goal and 8 points to no goals and 1 point. Unfortunately, the Malaysian Mens teams couldn’t match their Ladies form and finished third and fourth in the rankings.
The Guinness SEA Games were hosted by Malaysia’s first Gaelic Football Club: Orang Éire and was a huge success. Over a hundred spectators, including Guinness Anchor Berhad Managing Director, Charles Ireland, and Ireland’s Ambassador to Malaysia, Eugene Hutchinson, enjoyed the hard-fought competition. Ambassador Hutchinson & Guinness Marketing Manager Peter Khemlani presented the trophies to the winners at a gala function in the Concorde Hotel KL.
